Social Skill Classes

Social skill classes focus on the dynamic aspects of social interactions such as compromise, negotiation, empathy, flexibility, reciprocity, social communication, co-regulation, and more.

During social skill classes we carefully introduce challenges to give children opportunities to work through uncertainty, to cope and recover from disappointment, and to build memories of themselves as competent social partners.

Classes are 60 to 90 minutes each and meet one or two times a week for 6 weeks.  Cost is based on a sliding fee scale. Call for details.

Groups are formed based on enrollment demand.  ***See Below.

"We have received excellent service from Responding To Autism. My 7 year old son has ASD. We have recently attended the social skills group that RTA offers.  This class has provided so many life tools for our son, and his school. People outside of our family have noticed a difference in my sons cognitive abilities and coping skills! Even our family doctor asked what we had done differently because she saw such a huge change in him!!! He is using the tools on his own, which we all know is huge!!! My sons life has been changed because of these wonderful classes and the staff at RTA.  He now introduces himself to others and respects their personal space!!!! In six weeks he learned so much we can not wait for our next class!!!!" ~ Helena Chowning

"When our son Cameron was diagnosed with Aspergers, we didn't know where to turn. Cameron had difficulty in social settings, sensory issues, and would often melt down with frustration. After attending the social skill classes several times, Cameron learned how to better deal with his emotions, how to handle frustrating situations and how to handle himself at school. Cameron is now excelling in school, church, scouts, and with friends. We attribute much of his success to the social skill classes at the Responding to Autism Center. We recommend it to anyone who has a child with high-functioning autism. The staff is patient, kind and so knowledgeable. We don't know where we would be without their help. They are the best!"  ~ Julie and Carl Howald

"We are really amazed at the emotional growth Evan has made in the social skill classes.  Evan is not very aware of other people's thoughts and feelings. He often had difficult time with other kids because he would try to control every situation. We would constantly monitor him to make sure he was interacting appropriately. Now, we are able to take him to play without him upsetting other kids and they really enjoy playing together! He is much happier and making good friends! We didn't expect things to happen so quickly. Now he has real friends!"  ~ Angela and Casey Adams
